LAW OF MOSES
A significant portion of the Old Testament record embodies the law of Moses. Some basic facts relative to that system must be understood. (a) It was given by God, and ordained by angels; it came through Moses as a mediator (Gal. 3:19). (b) It was given at Sinai (cir. 1500 B.C.), and was terminated at the cross (Col. 2:14). (c) The law required perfect obedience, or else it brought a curse (Dt. 27:26; Gal. 3:10). (d) It was characterized by carnal ordinances (Heb. 9:10). (e) The law was designed to prepare for the coming of Christ (Gal. 3:19; 24-25). (f) It contained prophecy that indicated it would be replaced by a new covenant (Jer. 31:31-34). (g) The law was given only to the nation of Israel (Dt. 5:1-5). (h) It had only animal blood, thus, forgiveness was on a year-by-year basis (Heb. 10:1-4; cf. Heb. 9:15). (i) Ultimately, it was weak and unprofitable in terms of effecting redemption (Heb. 7:18; Gal. 4:4). (j) While the Mosaic law is not a law for Christians, it does contain many valuable historical lessons and abiding principles (Rom. 15:4).
