MILLENNIUM

The term "millennium" signifies a period of 1,000 years. It is a common belief among many who are identified with "Christendom" that Jesus Christ will return to this earth to set up his kingdom in the city of Jerusalem, there to reign for a span of one thousand years -- called the "millennium." This theory is barren of Bible support. Note the following facts: (a) The basis of the doctrine of millennialism is asserted to be found in Revelation 20:1ff. It is not said to be expressed anywhere else in Scripture -- which fact of itself makes it a most unlikely candidate for a major theological doctrine. (b) Revelation 20 lacks all of the major ingredients for the millennial dogma. There is no mention of Christ's return to earth, no allusion to David's throne, no mention of Jerusalem, no reference to the kingdom. (c) The term "thousand" (chilias) is found nineteen times in the book of Revelation; not once is it employed in a literal sense. (d) The "millennial" doctrine contradicts the general teaching of the Bible in numerous particulars. See DISPENSATIONALISM. (e) While the symbolism of Revelation is difficult at times, and there is some disagreement among responsible expositors, any view entertained with reference to particular points must be consistent with scriptural teaching elsewhere. The most likely view of the "thousand years" is that it reflects a picture of the "complete" victory of the church over her enemies. This harmonizes with the general thrust of the book -- Christ and his people overcome Satan and his forces (Rev. 20:1ff; 14:1ff; 19:11-16).
