RETRIBUTION

Retribution will be the dispensing of the "wrath of God," as an expression of divine justice, upon those who have persisted in wicked rebellion against their Maker. The expression "wrath of God" is found about twelve times in the English Bible. One term in the Greek N.T., that suggests the divine disposition for retribution is thumos, anger that "boils," while another word is orge, which hints of an abiding and settled state of mind (Trench). Perhaps these two terms in concert depict the intensity of God's righteous judgment, and the sustained determination to punish the incorrigible. Here are some facts regarding Heaven's retribution. (a) It is not impulsive; rather, it is characterized by great patience (Gen. 6:3; Ex. 34:6). (b) When evil men persistently reject the Lord, he is willing "to show his wrath and make his power known" (Rom. 9:22). The great Flood of Noah's day is evidence aplenty of this. (c) The final exhibition of his retribution will be thorough and final (Mt. 3:12; Rom. 1:18). (d) Retribution will be just; it will be a day of the revelation of the righteous judgment of God (Gen. 18:25; Rom. 2:5; cf. Rev. 19:11) upon those who have earned their just reward (Rom. 6:23). These are "vessels" who have "fitted themselves" for destruction (Rom. 9:22; see "destruction" in Vine). (d) Retribution is not arbitrary (as Calvinism alleges); rather, any man may escape it, for God is not willing that anyone should perish (2 Pet. 3:9). Those who obey the gospel can be "saved from the wrath of God" (Rom. 5:9).
