SATAN

The Hebrew term satan ("adversary" - one who "cherishes animosity") comes over into Greek as diabolos ("slanderer, accuser"). Satan is a spirit-being who is the arch-enemy of God and man. His characteristic activity is to "tempt" (Mt. 4:3), and his destiny is eternal torment (Rev. 20:10). See DEVIL.
