SON OF MAN

The expression "Son of Man" is found mostly in the Gospel accounts (some 80 times) -- especially the Synoptics (see) -- and it is the term Christ used more than any other to designate himself. In fact, only he uses it of himself. The word is a Messianic title with roots in the O.T. (cf. Dan. 7:13). One aspect of the phrase is to identify Jesus as an actual human being. On the other hand, the expression is also employed to stress the Lord's authority as a divine being. It is as "Son of man" that he will exercise divine judgment (Jn. 5:27). Note how the phrases "Son of man" and "Son of God" are used interchangeably in Matthew 16:13-16. "Son of man" is used in relation to Jesus' atoning death in Mark 10:45.
