JOEL, BOOK OF

Joel, a prophet of the southern kingdom of Judah, labors to warn the Hebrew people of the coming "day of the Lord," a time of judgment upon a rebellious people. The punishment is described under a dreaded plague of locust. Those who remain faithful, however, will be blessed. Joel predicts the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost (2:28ff).
